CORRUPTION CASTLE

ROLE

Lead Developer and Environment Designer

DESCRIPTION

Corruption Castle is a 2D souls-like platformer where your objective is to rid the castle of corruption by traversing it's different levels and defeating the boss at the end.

BACKSTORY

Corruption castle was one of the first 2D games I worked on and finished.  It was developed for a game development class in University and it was praised as one of the best games made that semester.  The goal was to incorporate many aspects of game design that we had been learning about throughout the semester.  Me and my friend wanted the game to be inspired by Dark Souls since we had never really seen a 2D version of it before.  We knew that we wanted tough enemies, bosses, rolling, and bonfires as part of the design.  Originally, the scope of the game was much larger as we wanted to have more of an open world design but it had to be scaled down to a level that could be showcased in a reasonable time in class.  Thus we decided to go with a castle that had been overtaken by corruption and needed a gallant hero to overthrow the evil boss.

TECHNICAL HISTORY (FOR NERDS)

The game was developed using Unity 2019 and most of the assets were sourced from itch.io.  Photoshop was also used for some of the pixel art and animations.  One interesting technical note is that the camera is not using an orthographic perspective.  The FOV is just increased drastically so that parts of the environment can be set to different depths for a parallax effect.  In game the sky will move slower relative to the camera than the mountains or trees in the background.  This gives a great bit of subconscious perspective and is just a nice touch overall to the look and feel of the game.
